Ik weet waarom u hier bent, want net als Neo en ik, bent u opzoek naar het ene antwoord op die ene vraag. Maar om te weten welk antwoord we zoeken, moeten we eerst de vraag weten. U weet de vraag, net als ik. Wat is de Matrix? Een ongeloofwaardige film of een wonderlijke waarheid? Net als het boek "1984"van George Orwell in 1948 onwaarschijnlijk en vergezocht leek (nu weten we wel beter), lijkt "The Matrix"net zo onwaarschijnlijk en vergezocht. Toch is het verhaal van de Matrix misschien minder onwaarschijnlijk dan het op het eerste gezicht lijkt.  Natuurlijk is onze vraag niet; wat is de Matrix? Maar: Wat is er nu eigenlijk mis met de wereld?

"Let me tell you why you're here. You're here because you know something. What you know, you can't explain. But you feel it. You felt it your entire life. That there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there. Like a splinter in your mind - driving you mad. It is this feeling that has brought you to me. Do you know what I'm talking about?"

Laat mij u vertellen waarom u hier bent. U weet iets. Wat u weet kunt u niet uitleggen, maar u voelt het. U heeft het uw hele leven gevoeld, of in ieder geval voor lange tijd. Er is iets mis in de wereld. U weet nog niet wat het is, maar het maakt u gek. U wilt graag weten wat het is dat u voelt en daarom bent u hier.

Graag wil ik u meenemen op deze zoektocht naar het antwoord. U kunt nu nog uitstappen en dan eindigt het verhaal en kunt u blijven geloven in datgene wat u ook maar wilt geloven. Blijft u zitten en leest u verder, dan kunt u zich opmaken voor een helse rit door het heden, verleden en een toekomst die nooit meer hetzelfde zal zijn.
